Splau is a large modern shopping mall on the outskirts of Barcelona.

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield desired not only to provide a pleasant shopping experience, but also to invest in the area and in sustainability, providing enhanced business and work opportunities and a better quality of life.

Bopro was entrusted with the BREEAM In-Use evaluation. We used the BIU scheme to evaluate the building asset and the building management. Suggestions were formulated to reduce the running costs and improve the environmental performance and to implement the key improvement of the surrounding areas linking the shopping centre: making Splau more accessible for cyclists and pedestrians and more inviting by greening and biodiversity measures and relaxation and play areas. Splau obtained an “OUTSTANDING” Score of above 92% for the Management part and only just missed the OUTSTANDING on the building part.

Program

This open air shopping centre counts 54,000 sqm, 144 shops and a multi-screen cinema. It’s a lifestyle venue featuring inclusive and green architecture, shops, as well as culture and leisure areas and a wide range of restaurants, serving the local population and business areas. It also provides a social hub for followers of the adjacent Espanyol football club and for passing tourists on the way to and from the nearby El Prat Airport.
