AZ Groeninge

Hospital in a large city area

AZ Groeninge
Location
Kortrijk

AZ Groeninge is a hospital development (1,050 beds), located at the Kennedypark in Kortrijk. The hospital consisted of four separate campuses and was moved in two phases to a new complex that looks like anything but a traditional hospital.

In 2005, the structural works of the first wing with 380 beds started, followed by the technical installations and the finishing phase of this project at the end of 2007. In mid-2008, Bopro was appointed to develop and implement a consistent project methodology with a view to commissioning the first phase by the end of 2010. During the 2nd phase, starting in 2012, safety coordination was added to the package. Phase 2 was commissioned in April 2017. Afterwards, the logistics and technical buildings were constructed.

Bopro led the decision-making procedure within the project team and managed the master planning and budget. Bopro also advised (second opinion) in the cost price technical discussions.

Sustainable concept

The atypical building is very flexible, making it easy to respond to rapidly changing hospital needs. An important starting point of the hospital was the comfort of the patient. The architectural firms Baumschlager & Eberle and Osar Architects ensured, for instance, rooms with a homely atmosphere and high windows providing lots of light and offering a view of a green environment. The complex is extremely energy-conscious and is based on extensive thermal and acoustic insulation of the building envelope. The use of green roofs, the provision of solar panels over the entire hospital, as well as a BEO field and a CHP will also help improve the sustainability of the hospital.
